Concussions and the Inability to POOP.
Can’t poop?
Yeah, that’s never fun.
It slows us down, makes us grumpy, and leaves us feeling heavy—literally and emotionally.
Constipation can lead to hemorrhoids, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and even skin problems. In more extreme cases, it can cause rectal prolapse and pelvic floor damage. That pelvic floor dysfunction? It might even show up as vaginal pain or dryness—and for men, it can be a sneaky secondary cause of erectile dysfunction due to impacted nerves and blood vessels.
When you “bump” your head (to put it lightly), a whole chain of events gets unleashed. Like falling dominoes, one system impacts the next.
Here’s what most people don’t realize:
Concussions don’t just affect your head. Depending on how the injury happened—a fall, a car accident, a hit during a game—the entire spine can be involved. Internal organs can be affected too, especially when the body experiences a sudden stop or impact.
Take the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X), for example. It exits the brainstem and connects with every major internal organ. If the nervous system gets thrown into chronic fight-or-flight mode (which happens often with concussions), this nerve can become irritated or dysfunctional. That disruption can ripple through your digestive system, your hormones, your breathing, even your circulation.
Feeling off in any of these ways?
High blood pressure? Check the head.
Constipation? Check the head.
Breathing issues? Check the head.
Balance problems? Check the head.
Nerve signals traveling down the spine—anywhere from T5 to the sacrum—can directly affect digestion and elimination. That includes your stomach and intestinal function, and loss of pelvic floor coordination, which makes it harder to "let go" physically and emotionally.
I know how wild this all sounds—but it’s real. And the good news?
You don’t have to live like this.
Concussions don’t have to be a life sentence. The emotional fog, the stuck digestion, the chronic fight-or-flight—it can all change when the brain and body reconnect and recalibrate.
